Sencha FAQs

Japanese Sencha is distinct from other global green teas primarily because of how it is processed. While most Chinese green teas are pan-fired to halt oxidation, Sencha is steamed immediately after harvesting. This steaming process preserves the leaf’s vibrant emerald color and locks in a unique flavor profile.

As a result, Sencha delivers a fresh, grassy, and slightly oceanic (umami) flavor, whereas pan-fired green teas tend to be toastier and earthier.

Brewing premium Sencha requires precise temperature control. Using water that is too hot will burn the delicate leaves and release excessive tannins, resulting in a harsh, bitter cup.

1. Add you tea leaves to your teapot. Use 1 teaspoon per serving (2g).

2. Heat water to 175°F (80°C) or add combine water + boiling water.

3. Pour the water over the leaves and steep for 2 to 3 minutes.

4. Remove tea leaves strainer and enjoy your PoppaTea Sencha.

Sencha provides a moderate amount of caffeine, offering a sustained energy lift without the severe crash associated with coffee.

A standard cup of Sencha contains less caffeine than Matcha, because Matcha involves consuming the entire powdered leaf, whereas Sencha is steeped and the leaves are removed.

Sencha = 25mg per 2g serving

Matcha = 60mg per 2g serving

Filtered Coffee = 80-120mg per serving
